U17 Girls Win PDT in Phoenix, U16 Girls take Second.

The Sparta ’95 Premier Girls team just swept through PDT (the President’s Day Tournament) in Phoenix, Arizona, going undefeated and winning the final in a PK shootout.

The team defeated SC del Sol (AZ), tied KC Fusion Academy (KS), and defeated Wyoming ODP (WY) in the preliminary rounds. After those rounds, the team lead the U17 tournament in both goals scored (9) and fewest goals surrendered (0). In the quarters, the team knocked off Burnsville Fire Storm (MN) 6-2. In the semis, the team knocked off FC United (IL) (the #2 ranked team in Region II) 3-2. Then, in the finals, the team came from behind to equalize 1-1 against Tucson Soccer Academy, sending the game to a PK shootout -- emerging victorious on the sixth shooter.

The Sparta ’95 Premier Girls teams is coached by Dennis Burrows, assisted by Ab Rees and Kris Lien.

We would like to thank SportsMed Utah for renewing their sponsorship with us. As you may be aware SportsMed Utah is also a major sponsor of Real Salt Lake. With this sponsorship it brings valuable resources such as free seminars on ACL injuries and prevention, they also provide us with trainers for select games if needed. They will also provide a trainer to visit team training sessions and assess and answer any questions that parents, coaches or players may have. They also offer a speed and agility program. Please utilize the resources that we have available to us.

U16 Girls Win Disney Showcase, U17 Girls Take Third

  Two Sparta teams just returned from the Disney College Showcase in Orlando, where they both returned with trophies.

The Sparta '96 Burrows team went undefeated, beating ISA Sting from New York and Premier Eagles from Maryland, and tying Hockessin SC Blast from Deleware in preliminary pool play. In the finals in the Disney stadium against Michigan Wolves-Hawks, Sparta scored an impressive 4-0 victory to take home the 1st place trophy.

The Sparta '95 Burrows team dropped their opening game against FC United from Chicago, before rebounding with a 3-1 win over Highland YSC Wildcats from New Jersey (ranked #21 in the nation). They then tied Concord Fire Elite from George to move to the 3rd place championship game against Seacoast United from New Hampshire. After leading most of the game, the Sparta team surrendered a goal in the 88th minute to fall into a 1-1 tie, then scoring in the last minute of the game to win 2-1 and claim the 3rd lace trophy.

More than 100 college coaches watched the team during the weekend.

San Diego Trip is Successful for Sparta Teams

Here is how the teams faired in the Thanksgiving Tournaments throughout San Diego.

Nomads

U18B Premier LS: 1 win, 1 loss, 2 draws. This team was the only team outside of California that advanced to the Quarterfinals at Nomads. Their only loss of the tournament coming in the quarterfinal to the Aztecs from California.

Surf

U12G Premier KL: 1 win, 2 losses. This team played 3 California teams and lost by only 1 goal in each of their losses. Some very good soccer was played.

U15G Premier KL: 1 win, 2 losses. This team also played 3 California teams winning one and losing 2 by one goal each.

U16G Premier DB: 3 wins, 2 losses. This team reached the semifinal in a tough fought tournament where they defeated Beach from California 1-0 and advanced to the final against Tualatin Hills where they eventually lost 2-0.

November Nights Showcase

U18G Premier PR: 3 wins, 0 losses. This team showed how good they are by winning all three games in front of many college coaches. During this tournament Ab Rees coached them.

U17G Premier DB: 0 wins, 3 losses. This team lost some very close battles with some very tough teams but showed that we can compete at the highest level.

Congratulations to these teams for representing the club very well in San Diego.

Teams Perform Well in Vegas

Here is a list of the teams and how they performed over the weekend. Our teams faced opponents from California, New Mexico, Nevada and Arizona. We showed that we could compete with the top teams in the Region as well as defeat them.

WCDA Conference Games

U14B Premier JK: 2 wins, 2 losses

U15B Premier PR: 2 wins, 1 loss

U16B Premier JK: 2 wins, 1 loss

U17B Premier MD: 3 wins, 1 loss

U18B Premier PR: 2 wins, 1 loss

Thanksgiving Classic Tournament

U10B Premier AR: 1 win, 3 losses. This team played U11 this tournament in an 11 v 11 format. This is the first time that they had done that and had a very successful tournament against players that were a year older and that had been playing 11 v 11 for some time.

U12B Premier DM: 3 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw. This team advanced to the semifinal where they played a familiar foe in Impact Black. They exacted some revenge from State Cup and won 2-0 and advanced to the final where they unfortunately lost to Heat from Nevada 1-0.

U14B Premier EG: 2 wins, 2 losses. This team advanced to the semifinal where they eventually lost in a shoot out.

U15B Premier DM: 1 win, 2 losses, 1 draw. This team had a great tournament against some tough teams. They played some great soccer and represented the club very well.

U13G Premier PR: 1 win, 1 loss, 2 draws. A very succesful tournament for this team. They showed that they can compete with the top teams in the country coming away with only 1 loss.

Congratulations to these teams for representing Sparta United Soccer Club very well and for a job well done.

Sparta Wins 2 of 8 Championships

It was a great finish to a fantastic State Cup. We ended up winning 2 of 8 total championships and having a total of 5 teams playing in the championship games. This is more than any other club. All games were close games and very enjoyable to watch. There was a lot of good soccer that was played. All but 1 of the games was decided by 1 goal, the only one that was not, was decided on penalty kicks. It is a great accomplishment for Sparta to have this many teams in the finals. Jacob Hustedt, Sparta class of '90, is drafted by San Jose

Former Sparta player Jacob Hustedt (’90) was drafted 25th in the MLS Superdraft by the San Jose Earthquakes. While at Sparta Jacob represented Sparta and the state of Utah on the Region IV team. Visit the San Jose Earthquakes website to read more about Jacob.

Sparta Alum, Phanuel Kavita, Named to US U-20 Mens National Team

Phanuel Kavita has been to the US U-20 Mens National Team. Phanuel who is a former player at Sparta with the ’93 Boys is currently a freshman at Clemson University. He will be looking to make the U-20 National Team that will compete in 2013 for the U-20 World Cup.

Former Sparta Player named Cal Pac Conference Freshman of the Year

Cal Pac Conference names Steffany Dudley 2011 Freshman Player of the Year!!

Sparta United wishes to congratulate Steffany Dudley who was honored for her efforts at Menlo College, California. Steffany was chosen as the 2011 Cal Pac Conference Freshman Player of the Year. In 18 matches for Menlo College, the freshman striker amassed 14 goals and 3 assists.

Prior to attending Menlo, Steffany was a member on the Sparta Premier team coached by John Gebhard.

University of Utah Fieldhouse is available for rent on Tuesday evenings

Beginning the 15th of November we have rented the U of U Fieldhouse every Tuesday from 6:00-8:00. Again, if you would like to rent time at this facility please contact Spencer at 801-824-5675 or spencer@spartaunited.org. Payment for the Fieldhouse will need to be made prior to using it.
