Dave was a very skillfull left footed soccer player who played in numerous Utah Youth State Cup Championships and many other prestitious Youth Soccer Tournaments as a member of the Sparta United Soccer Club as a youth, along with his twin brother Ben. 

He became a member of the National All-Rocky Mountain High School Boys Team and was presented with the National Soccer Coaches of America and Umbro 1996 Secondary School State Player of the Year Award for Utah. Following High School, Dave attended his freshman year at Charleston University in South Carolina and then transferred to Salt Lake Community College where he played on the soccer team which went on to play in the national tournament.
